About Capella Sydney

Originally established in 1912 as the Department of Education, this storied building has been reimagined as Capella Hotels’ inaugural Australian retreat, setting a new standard in luxury hospitality, just moments from Sydney’s most celebrated landmarks.

Encased within heritage-listed architecture, 192 guest rooms and suites have been sensitively revitalised to create a serene urban sanctuary. Each space blends classic elegance with contemporary sophistication, featuring meticulously curated artworks, bespoke furnishings, and cutting-edge in-room technology designed for modern comfort.

Our Deluxe, Premier, Tower and Skyline Rooms feature super king beds, and start from a spacious 45sqm in size. Our rooms showcase opulent bathrooms that include rain shower, dual vanity, and deep-soaking bathtub, along with sleek furnishings, seating area or desk, wardrobe and ample space for comfort.

Our 23 Deluxe and Skyline Suites offer expansive, exquisitely appointed bedroom and living spaces. With sweeping views of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks, each suite is crafted with exceptional attention to detail, from captivating objets d’art and a super king bed dressed in bespoke Italian Frette linen, to indulgent Bamford amenities and seamlessly integrated, cutting-edge technology designed
for effortless comfort.

Our Prestige Suites are all unique, and the best suite options at Capella Sydney. The Liberty Suite is our only loft room, and has views of the harbour bridge from both luxurious bathroom, and loft bedroom. The Capella Suite spans the entire length of the building, 235sqm in size, and can host intimate cocktail parties or private dinner events for 10 guests, with a private chef.

Venue History

The building that now houses the luxurious Capella Sydney was originally built between 1912 and 1915, to serve as the headquarters for the New South Wales Department of Education. Conceived by Government Architect George McRae, its grand and commanding design reflected the era’s deep commitment to public education and its vital role in shaping future generations.

Capella Sydney invited Aboriginal artist Judy Watson to create artworks that reflect and respond to the
building’s rich heritage. Her pieces are exhibited within the original directory board frames located at
the Farrer Place hotel entrance, breathing new life into these historical elements and imbuing them
with renewed significance.

Reception Spaces

The McKenzie Room is also a great space for a wedding reception, with boardroom style dining table for up to 22 guests. Additionally, the Wyndham Room maintains many of its heritage features such as original wooden panelling and moulded ceiling, with a neutral palette accented by deep walnut hues, evoking a welcoming atmosphere with refined sophistication. This space can accommodate up to 16 guests at the wide boardroom table. Capella Sydney also has two smaller Board Rooms with round tables for 10 guests, or our larger Smith Room accommodating up to 54 people for a more traditional style wedding reception layout, with bridal table and dancefloor.
