Couples that are eloping aren’t necessarily having small weddings because they just want to save money. Most eloping couples genuinely do not want to have a big traditional wedding. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t want a beautiful wedding and that doesn’t mean that they aren’t prepared to spend proper money to get their dream wedding.

We have found that many venues don’t understand this and just won’t do small weddings. Either because they can’t make it profitable enough or they think their venue is just too big. My feeling is that they think it isn’t profitable enough.

If you find a venue that is perfect for you, but the venue feels that your wedding is too small, ask them what their ‘minimum spend’ is. That is, the minimum amount of money you need to spend to make the event profitable enough for them to take it on. You might find that it is not as much as you might think. Plus it means that instead of paying for dinner for 50 to 150 people, you can spend the money on the best food, drinks and styling and have the most amazing small wedding.

My second piece of advice if you are having trouble finding a venue, is to consider mid-week or winter weddings. Wedding venues are much more likely to want your business in these off-peak times.

1. The Islington Boutique Hotel

The Islington is the perfect blend of modern and traditional architecture, this super-luxe boutique hotel has fine art and antique furnishings throughout. Another option for this venue is to book their penthouse and have your ceremony on the balcony overlooking Hobart and then have a private dinner in the penthouse.

3. Runnymede Hotel Hobart

Rich in history this sandstone colonial house was built in 1840 and served as a whaling captain’s house. The National Trust has restored and furnished the house returning it to its original elegance. Boasting a rich collection of maritime artifacts, today it is a museum dedicated to marine conservation.

Runnymede is located just 8 min north of Hobart in New Town and with beautiful lawns and gardens, it is the perfect spot for an intimate Hobart garden wedding. There are also a number of intimate spaces where you could hold a small wedding dinner and is a perfect small wedding venue in Hobart.

4. Puddleduck Vineyard

Nestled in the Coal River Valley only 20 minutes from Hobart, Puddleduck Vineyard is family owned and run. And it is a beautiful location for a small intimate Hobart wedding or elopement.

This property is perfectly set up for smaller weddings. Wedding ceremonies can be held at the cellar door with large doors opening out over the large deck that overlooks the dam offering water views on top of the stunning surrounding vineyards. Follow on with nibbles and drinks for your guests including their famous Bubbleduck Sparkling. Access to the beautiful vineyards and grounds for photos included in their packages.

5 – ML Egeria – Motor Yacht Club

How about an elopement on the water, around Hobart, in your own private, historic boat. Well, you can do that on the M.L. Egeria.

The ML Egeria a classic antique Huon pine and Teak vessel built in 1941 that is located at the Motor Yacht Club of Tasmania. It is just under twenty meters in length and you can have functions, weddings, private dinners and even elopements on it. It could be one of the most unique small wedding venues in Hobart.

You and your guests can be picked up from various wharves including Bellerive Wharf, Waterman’s Dock or Kings Pier. And catering and drinks can be arranged. If you love the water and are after something a bit different, then the ML Egeria might be perfect for you.

6. The Signal Station

Just 10 min out of Hobart the historic Signal Station sits upon high 300m above the city on Mount Nelson. Offering unparalleled 180 degree views over Hobart City, the Derwent River, The D’entrecateaux channel and on a clear day Bruny Island.

7. Succulent at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens

Succulent is a restaurant located in the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens in Hobart and it is a really good choice if you are looking for a small wedding venue in Hobart.

It is located in the visitors centre, at the main gate and offer beautiful views and wonderful Tasmanian food and wine.

But the real reason I think this is a great option for an elopement or small wedding is the fact that it is located in the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. You can have your marriage ceremony within the grounds of the gardens, take beautiful wedding photos around the 14 hectares of land and then have a small reception at Succulent. Sounds perfect!

8. The Fat Pig

Fat Pig Farm is a working 70-acre farm that grows and breeds everything they serve in their restaurant.  Located in the magnificent Huon Valley, it has a heritage orchard and is also home to Matthew Evans who is a chef by trade and also hosts The Gourmet Farmer show on SBS..  There is a dining room purposely built for these events and it can cater for up to 40 guests.  From land, to table, to fork, to mouth – a very different wedding format to be talked about long after your wedding day has come and gone.

9. Frogmore Creek Winery

Frogmore Creek Winery has a cellar door has many accolades under its sleeves, an on-site restaurant and is located in the Coal River Valley.  Additionally, it has the charming amphitheatre with an all-encompassing view of the winery, the hills and the waterways.  Your ceremony can be held anywhere on this stunning estate and the Barrel Room provides the perfect setting for an elegant wedding reception. Known for its high caliber of cuisine and fine wines, your guests will not be disappointed.  Catering is provided in-house and they can host up to 50 guests.

10. Port Arthur Historic Site Open Air Chapel

Port Arthur Historic Site is one and a half hours from Hobart CBD.  Beautiful beaches and breathtaking coastal views, gardens and convict ruins make some amazing backdrops for your elopement.

There is an open-air Convict Church amongst the evocative ruins that is perfect for your wedding ceremony that can accommodate up to 150-seated guests.  If the weather misbehaves, there is a backup venue – a small chapel next to the Church, St David’s Church.  The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority provides for all catering.   The landscape and the historic setting of this venue really set it apart from other places. 12. MONA

For lovers of the arts, Mona is a world-famous museum, perched on a river, encircled by a vineyard, and with its own wineries and a brewery. In this Museum of old and new art, you will find $300 million collection of art and ancient artefacts from around the world.  In spite of this precious collection, you are allowed to hold weddings here and you will find some amazingly good-looking spaces to invade for curating your love story.

Located on top of Mona is The Source Restaurant and there is also a new restaurant called Faro, both suitable for receptions.  The cuisine is chef-hatted and the wine list is obscenely deep and holds many accolades.  There is like over 3,000 options.  Catamarans, bus, cars and bikes can access Mona.

A lover of fresh oysters, fresh air and fresh seafood, Barilla Bay is a ‘must visit’ wedding destination for you.
