Tips for choose an Elopement Marriage Celebrant

I can’t stress to you how important is it to choose an awesome marriage celebrant for your elopement. The quality of marriage celebrants varies greatly throughout Australia, which is why you should choose your celebrant based on more than simply price.

This is a lifelong commitment you are making to each other, so it is so important to choose a really good celebrant that suits you and will give you the ceremony you deserve. Here are some tips to get you started on the right path to finding your perfect elopement marriage celebrant.

Think of the type of elopement ceremony you want

A superb celebrant will maintain their composure under pressure, establish the tone for the day, tell your love story in an engaging manner, and leave your guests feeling uplifted and ready for the celebration.

Above all, you want a celebrant who will pay attention to your wishes and whom you can trust to perform an amazing job. You’ll need to find someone with whom you get along, with someone you can laugh, and perhaps even cry.

First and foremost, consider the overall VIBE you want to achieve during your ceremony. Are you going for a more traditional or nontraditional vibe? Is it more formal or more casual? Fun? Funny? Romantic?

It’s a good idea to recall any weddings you’ve been to as a guest. What aspects of the ceremony or the celebrant did you enjoy (or, more importantly, dislike)? Knowing this will help you decide out exactly what you want, and once you do, you’ll be one step closer to selecting the perfect celebrant to help you reach your goals.

Looks at a few marriage celebrants

As enticing as it may be to go with the first celebrant who comes highly recommended, the difference between a passable celebrant and one who truly understands what you want is like milk and honey. They may truly make the difference between a memorable day and another average wedding.

The first place you should look at is obviously Eloping Australia. Look through their profile and see if their personalities match with yours. Do they seem like a fun, relaxed person, do you think their ceremonies will be funny and loud, or softer and with more feeling.

Choosing a celebrant is tricky because it’s hard to see what they are like in action. So see if they have any video footage of them doing a ceremony. Either on their website or on their socials. A video can give you a good indication of what their elopement ceremonies will be like.

Some things I look for in a celebrant are:

  • Do they speak well in front of a crowd?
  • Can they handle the pressure if things don’t go to plan?
  • Do they tell the story of the couple or do they talk about love and marriage is?
  • Who is the ceremony about… is it about the couple or it is about them?
  • Do they have professional reliable equipment?

Check their experience and reviews

One thing I do want to say is that not all older celebrants are boring and not all younger celebrants are talented. It can be the opposite. But one thing is certain from my experience. The celebrants that do lots of weddings and are experienced, and I mean at least 1 or 2 every weekend, are so much better than those celebrants who do 1 or 2 a month.

Repetition is the mother of skill. And this is the same with celebrants. So those celebrants that do lots of weddings are naturally going to be so much better than other celebrants. They will speak confidently in front of a crowd, they will know their equipment inside and out. They will know how to entertain and control a crowd and what to do in any scenario. Most importantly they will be good at their craft.

So someone could have 25 years of experience, but if they only do a few weddings every year then I bet that they still get nervous and every wedding feels like their first.

Checking a celebrant’s reviews is also a good indication of their experience. Have a look at their website, google reviews, Instagram, and Facebook. This should give you a good idea of how much couples love them and how experienced they are.

Don’t price shop your marriage celebrant

Price is the worst way you can choose a celebrant. There is always someone cheaper. And you get what you pay for. And this is particularly true with marriage celebrants.

When you enquire with a celebrant don’t just ask them how much they are. You probably don’t know what to ask, but it is not the right question to ask them and the top celebrant may also think you are just price shopping. Instead, tell them about sort of ceremony you envisage and the vibe you want your ceremony to have. It is a much nicer way to engaging with a good celebrant.

If you are eloping you are already saving lots of money by not having hundreds of guests at your wedding. So spend money on areas that are important. And a celebrant is one of those areas.

How much does an elopement marriage celebrant cost in Australia? Expect to pay $1,000 to 1,500+ for an awesome celebrant. This is how much professional celebrants charge, not including travel. There are obviously going to be a lot of celebrants charging only a few hundred dollars, but they are more likely to be celebrants that are just starting out or ones that have very little experience.

Book your elopement marriage celebrant early

The best marriage celebrants all around Australia will book up quickly. Especially for Saturdays and especially during those peak seasons. And a celebrant will only be able to do one… maybe two ceremonies in a day.

So consider having a weekday elopement. There are lots of advantages and you will be more likely to get your preferred celebrant. Elopement marriage celebrants are so important for a beautiful and personal elopement and I hope we can help you find one.
